Morgan Weistling's "Dancing Bunny" Demo

What are values? They are the differing tones on form that distinguish their lightness or darkness in relationship to the light source. That sounds confusing. How you use and organize those tones will make or break your painting.

Like I do with edges, I like to break down values to just a few. In nature, there are a limitless number of gradual steps of value to turn a form. But we are limited by our crude paints, so we must simplify. As a "general rule," 5 or 6 values are plenty. 3 for the light side and 2 for the shadows.

But what do I mean by light and shadows? That's next.
